Just one query: does "March 1985 ... page 25" refer to vol. 9, issue 4 of the magazine the review originally appeared in, or does it refer to the page number of the book containing all the vol. 9-10 issues? No problem, Bruce1ee. It means page 25 of the March 1985 issue, which is volume 9, issue 4. Lots of libraries bind runs of magazines together (here, volumes 9 and 10), and Google Books retains such cataloging despite it being both confusing and somewhat arbitrary. 1984 probably refers to the year of the first issue included in the particular library’s bound set. —Usernameunique (talk) 21:17, 28 September 2018 (UTC)

The Sunday Times

It was about Germaine Greer—signed by eight feminists, including Sheila Rowbotham—that reportedly said, among other things: "Germaine Greer never involved herself in the women's movement in this country, and judging by some of the nonsense she spouts about her Italian lovers, she has had little contact with the Italian movement either. Her thoughts are her own."

It may be possible the letter was not published in The Sunday Times, but in another British newspaper. Searching on Google for "involved herself in the women's movement in this country", it was reported by the Associated Press in American newspapers, as occurring between January 1984 and mid-March 1984, but the precise British newspaper is unspecified. By the way, do you have the very recently published Elizabeth Kleinhenz biography? If Kleinhenz (who mentions the putative letter in this November bloggish article), mentions the putative letter in the biography, she should footnote or endnote it with date and page number (if not, she's a pretty crappy biographer in my opinion). If it's not mentioned in the book, I would contact her via email or Facebook or whatever, and have her give you newspaper, date, and page number, and then double-check the entire letter via archives. Also noting that the portion of the letter quoted by Kleinhenz isn't quite the same as the portion above, so using some of those phrases may not turn it up. There's no issue of the Sunday Times of London for 8 February 1984 as it's a Wednesday. Searching through all of February of that year turned up a long article Greer wrote, "Why Women make Bad Mothers", on 5 Feb but there didn't seem to be an accompanying letter in that issue. The following week a number of responses were showcased by the paper in "Dear Ms Greer" published 12 Feb, but that quote doesn't seem among them. There was a Sunday 8 Jan, Sunday 8 April, and Sunday 8 July, but none of those issues had this letter either. I went through the Times of London on 8 Feb, but did not find the letter there either. I edit conflicted with your recent comment, so I'll look for those other signatories and the common phrase as well and fill you in on how that goes. Wugapodes, thank you for doing all this searching. I must say that I'm a little puzzled that Google only has a couple of references to this. Perhaps the newspaper removed it after the first edition. There's also this Guardian article that quotes a bit more and connects the letter to The Female Eunuch published in 1970. Both 1970 and 1981 have a Sunday 8 February, but searching those editions for "Germaine Greer" returns nothing. Harper & Row has given her new book a U.S. publication date of March 14, and it will be available in stores in about two weeks. Sex and Destiny was officially released in Britain Monday but had already roused a furor in January when the author compressed some of her major ideas into three essays in the Sunday Times of London. The essays brought a rash of letters, as well as comment in other British newspapers, with many complaining that a feminist guru had made a U-turn. Some said her sociology and anthropology were selective or inaccurate. A few said that a woman who was a radical when she was in her 20s and 30s had become a conservative in her 40s. Eight British feminists wrote a joint letter to emphasize that Ms. Greer, a native Australian who has made her home in Britain for 20 years, “has never involved herself in the women’s movement in this country.” Some people found evidence of change in her hairstyle, no longer a youthful frizz. Sometimes she puts it in a bun. sometimes she just combs it back. "I am 45 years old. My father died last year, which is the reason I put my hair up,” she said in an interview with The Associated Press. “I figure I’m not 16 anymore, I can't go around with my hair in my eyes. I’m not a waif. Ifs not attractive anymore, so I might as well look like an intelligent grownup.” About criticism of her book, Ms. Greer retorted that she was “not at all conservative.” "Anyone who thinks I’m conservative is making a mistake,” she said. “They think I’m in favor of chastity. I’m not. I’m in favor of perversity. I think we’re having extremely dull sex. .. . It was more fun in the back of a Pontiac. ... It was more surprising and interesting. ... “I think that some young kids have sex these days instead of conversation. It's easier, especially with the pill. Before you had to talk like fury because you weren’t going to get there unless you did, so you had more time to find out who you were and who the other person was.” One chapter, entitled “Chastity Is a Form of Birth Control,” covers practices in traditional societies where men and women are segregated, or the women are veiled, or parents stop having intercourse when their eldest children reach puberty. Western efforts to limit population growth in traditional societies should have concentratef on such practices, Ms. Greer argues. “It is fatally easy for Western folk, who have discarded chastity as a value for themselves, to suppose it can have no value for anyone else,” she writes. The major theme of her book is to urge the West to stop imposing its mores on traditional societies. But the biggest controversy came from her approval of the ... practice of coitus interruptus, or male withdrawal before ejaculation “Where can you find the one man in a thousand who can do it”” asked an irate woman when Ms. Greer went on a radio phone-in show. The Sunday Times printed one protest letter which accused the author of “asking young women virtually to hand over control of reproduction to men ... There were hundreds of thousands for whom the method failed with tragic results.” Ms. Greer, divorced in 1973, doesn’t recommend the technique for the young or for casual relationships, but said, “It can work in longterm relationships.” Her book makes a strong plea for the condom and diaphragm as primary methods of contraception. The steroid birth-control pill “is not the magic thing that we thought it was,” she writes. Ms. Greer argues that the West has no business imposing its ideas or birth-control gadgets on traditional societies when its own house is in such disorder.

SV: Doubtful that Greer kept a hard copy of a letter-to-the-editor criticizing her (or held on to it for 30 years). Who would? If she did, she either only clipped out the letter, not the masthead and date, so that Kleinmetz's citation is incorrect either in date or publication name -- or Kleinmetz just got really mixed up and sloppy, as she kind of admits to in her essay about her research: [8]. -- Softlavender (talk) 03:54, 15 December 2018 (UTC)

Softlavender, it seems she kept everything, and recently sold her archive for A$3 million. It's most peculiar that this letter isn't turning up, especially as the AP wrote about it. She sold the archive in 2013. It doesn't say she kept "everything", and it definitely doesn't say she kept letters-to-the-editor criticizing her (from the sound of her vicious responses to Kleinhenz's benign inquiries, she doesn't like either criticism or intrusions). From the sound of it it's just her writings and correspondence to and fro; perhaps actual reviews or (favorable) coverage. Also, Kleinhenz only had access to the archive for a few months (maybe 7 months tops) before they closed it for 11 months -- not sure she went back to it, not sure how accurate her notes were. It's possible that the Sunday Times removed it after the first edition because of a complaint—archives would presumably be created from the final edition—but the AP reporting on it a month later would suggest that it existed beyond the first edition. Even if we had the wrong newspaper, it should have turned up with a Google or other database search. Even if we had the wrong newspaper, it should have turned up with a Google or other database search. Not necessarily; many newspaper archives from the 1980s or prior are not searchable via Google or many databases; many are exclusive to hardcopies, native databases, or microfilm/microfiche. For instance, The Guardian has a for-pay exclusive searchable archive that covers the 1980s; and as far as I recall the same goes for The Independent and The Telegraph; and Gale owns The Times/The Sunday Times archives. • Wugapodes, the March 1984 London Associated Press article specifically states that in January 1984 Greer "compressed some of her major ideas into three essays in the Sunday Times of London". Are you able to find those in January 1984? If so, then you are at least on the right track, and the letters to the editor were in response to that (not necessarily on Sundays). One of the letters they quoted was from Sheila Rowbotham and seven other unnamed feminists. I assume that the letter Kleinhenz saw in the Greer archive at the University of Melbourne was the original letter to the newspaper. Hello, I am requesting this full book scan (94 pages), though I am aware of the policy that 'we can not perform full book scan'. I have a strong reason for my request: This is a dictionary type book, which contains brief description about Gujarati writers, Gujarati books and other things related to Gujarati literature, so apparently It is very useful to me in citation, article improvements, and article creation. (Note that: There are a lack of English language sources related to Gujarati literature). The book is not available in my local libraries; also it is out of print in India.
